| Eric Butcher was born in
Singapore and moved to England in 1974. He read
philosophy at Cambridge University where he specialised
in aesthetics he went on to win a scholarship
to Wimbledon School of Art where he graduated
with an MA in Fine Art in 2001.Butcher has received
numerous awards including The Rodges Trust Award,
the BCOT Fine Art Printmaking Award and was shortlisted
for both the Hunting Art Prize and The Portobello
Open, ButcherÕs approach is largely determined
by the the physical process of production, the
outcome is a body of work which is, on one level,
about the very act of painting and the physicality
of the materials. The source of his engagement
with painting is a fascination with its physical
presence, they are objects rather than pictures.
His choice of tools and materials and decisions
regarding size and depth or the display of a piece
being as consequential for him as the actual painted
surface.
